HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Or, more appropriately as I am split down the middle Scottish and Irish (by way of Vikings, of course), HAPPY SAMHAIN! Alas, a brief history lesson: Oidhche Shamhna, or Samhain in Scottish Gaelic, is “a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the "darker half" of the year. Traditionally it is held on 1 November, but with celebrations beginning on the evening of 31 October, as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. It’s believed to be the night where the veil between the living and the dead, this world and that, is at its very thinnest, and as such, spirits can pass between them. It’s always been my most favorite holiday of the year, and always will be. I haven’t been yet, but before I die I want to attend a traditional Samhain festival in Scotland and Ireland. My celebration is Celtic inspired, as I'm Irish, Scottish, Welch and god knows how many more Celt countries....I usually go out to the Halloween street festival here - all costumed up, but of course it is cancelled this year. Carving pumpkins, snacking on apples, and I also set up an ancestors' dinner usually at midnight with wine, setting a place for each person I am remembering. I send out my wishes for manifestation, light candles and finish the wine....and with this rare full moon, maybe dance in the light of it! Happy Samhain.
As this year will be much different than past years, we decided to try and make new traditions and do our best to make the most of it. We will put our portable fire pit in the front yard and do a Halloween parade of costumes with the other neighbor kids. Sort of fun being the first Full Moon on a Halloween night since, I don’t know when!?
