Take away every bit of the extraneous details of this holiday, take away its possibly nefarious beginnings, take away the misconceptions and the rituals, and strip it down to one thing. Take away the stuffing, the turkey, the cranberry sauce with ridges from the can; take away the pies, the parades, the football, and whatever else fills the day for you, and replace it with this: Give Thanks. That is all, that is it, that is the whole of it. Give thanks for your life, for your breath in your lungs. Give thanks for your beautiful mind and the world it creates inside yourself; give thanks for those you have, those you lost, those you’re waiting to find. Give thanks for kindness given, kindness received, give thanks for the hope that burns if you just allow it to burn. Give thanks, for it’s the reason behind today, and we lose sight of that sometimes. Give thanks, that is it, and that is all. I am thankful for you, each and every one of you, I am thankful for my life, for the joy it’s held, the sorrow I’ve endured. I am thankful for my wife, and the way she makes me make sense, I am thankful for this sliver of hope in me that won’t stop telling me that everything is going to be ok.
Give and give again,
take from me all that you need.
I'll never run out.
