We hold a lot of guilt in our lives, blame ourselves for things we’ve no business blaming ourselves for, hold ourselves to the fire and feel our fingers burn when it was never us that lit the match. We have these ideals we force ourselves to live up to, bars that are set but never by our own hands. When we feel we fail (we’re not really failing) we crash, lower than where we began, and it’s there we try to start again. Why? The ideals they carry for us are not our burdens to haul, not our crosses to bear. Who we are, what we wish for ourselves, the goals we set, the bars we raise, are up to us, and we define the word success as it applies to ourselves. Stop carrying these weights, stop hauling this wood. As my friend Kate, the word witch, recently said to me, “get off the cross, we need the wood.” Hop down friends, use that wood to start your own fire, warm your own hands.
It is not your job
to live up to the ideals
they carry of you.
