Called myself broken for many years, believed something defective in the way I loved. Said it early, said it first, felt it stirring ages before others, called it love when I knew it as love, felt no shame in the saying. Belonged to me, this love, this spark of something that didn’t dim in me when shared, if I’m warm, I thought, couldn’t others also be? Gave it, early, first, often.
I am the love I give away, I am the continued giving despite what is returned. Embarrassment has never come, never seeped in and stained this purity. Protected with honesty, perhaps, I say it when I feel it, I feel it when it’s real, and this insulates me. Perhaps I am kept warm with the truth of how I love, how I only laugh when I mean it, I only cry when there are tears that need falling.
If one day it’s discovered that our superpowers are our vulnerabilities at the very same time, I will understand. I will nod with realization that it’s how it should be, and when confronted again with a heart’s thumping that lends rhythm of love, I will open my mouth and share the song. Called myself broken for many years, believed something defective, but maybe, just maybe, I’ve been doing it right all this time.
If I am loved back
has never really stopped me
from giving my love.

Good God.
Love. Truth, sometimes it’s soft, like the daily rise and setting of the sun. Other times it’s momentarily blinding, like the shock of high noon after spelunking. Either way, you’re stunned, spellbound. You either choose to stop and stare, soak it in, or run for cover, shade your eyes, and go about your day ignoring the very beams which make all life possible.
