A Page Maybe Two | 3.13.21
I love the quirks of those we cherish, I love the tiny things that make them who they are, the idiosyncrasies, the unseen bits. My wife is a woman of these, filled to the brim. She’s a woman of opposites, she’s a woman of juxtapositions, she’s a woman of multitudes. One of my favorites, one that pops out anytime I find my mind drifting off to her, is her love of books, her deep love of reading. I don’t know if I know anyone that loves to read more, but I also don’t know anyone that falls asleep so quickly each time she begins to actually do so. Each night she lays down full of excitement and apprehension for the world that lives inside those pages, and each night without fail the book is closed, her eyes with it, two minutes later.
A page, maybe two, and she’s forced to shut up shop, close the book and place it on the headboard behind her, roll to her side, sigh, and fall asleep. Cheesy, I know, but I absolutely adore this.
A month later, I’m a handful of books ahead and she’s still just as excited to read the same one she’s on, a page or two at a time. Fact is folks, it’s these little quirks that glue us to those we love, that anchor our hearts to theirs. This is who they are, and the edges of our hearts are stitched tightly with these threads.
A page, maybe two, and I watch each night with a smile. Sometimes, when she’s not the energy to even close the book, I quietly reach over, close the book, remove the glasses, and say goodnight.
A page maybe two
before your eyes close again.
You read before sleep.

It's a wonderful sweet tribute to your lovely relationship. My family teases me as I do the same. Always have a stack of books I'm reading concurrently, always fall asleep reading. Used to fall asleep in the bath tub while reading but ruined too many books!
